Booker Prize Winner
P.H. Newby published 20 novels for adults, two for children, a book of short stories, three books on Middle Eastern history, and two books on literary criticism. His books have been translated into Japanese, Romanian, Polish, and Macedonian. Ten novels were republished in the Faber Finds series in 2008.
Most of the novels stand alone, but The Picnic at Sakkara, (1955) Revolution and Roses, (1957) and A Guest and His Going (1959) form the Egyptian trilogy, and The Retreat (1953) is a sequel to A Step to Silence (1952).
Something to Answer For was awarded the first ever Booker Prize award in 1969.
