Mr P.H. Newby’s short critical survey of the novel as art-from and social phenomenon in the five-year period from 1945 to the beginning of 1950 includes a consideration of the effects of the war upon the writing of fiction, including the short story, and chapters dealing with tradition and experiment, with satire, and with characters and situation. Special attention is focused on authors whose names rise most readily to mind; there is also a shrewd assessment of the work of Mr Newby’s colleagues among the leading younger novelists.
